Description of Work Unit

The College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) is a major locus for biomedical education including undergraduate, graduate, veterinary and post-doctoral training and for translational biomedical research at Colorado State University. BMS houses more than 30 research laboratories. Faculty members’ interests run the gamut from human and animal anatomy and neuroanatomy, reproductive biology and endocrinology to molecular neuroscience and cardiovascular physiology.
The CSU STEM Center, a university-wide organization, serves as a hub for (1) facilitating and collaborating on STEM engagement program, research, or evaluation grants on and off-campus and (2) showcasing and connecting on and off-campus STEM engagement programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the teacher preparation and development programs.
The Health Education Outreach Center (HEOC) serves to deliver STEM-centric education and outreach as a component of CSU’s involvement with the National Western Center (NWC) to advance STEM disciplines and make in-depth health and science exploration available to a diverse population of students.



Position Summary

The Associate Director of Outreach and Engagement will serve as the college’s leader in all things outreach and engagement. This includes the responsibility of developing outreach and engagement policies, procedures, and activities in support of the college’s six strategic pillars. This effort includes the development of K-12 education and outreach activities within the primary liaison to the Spur at the National Western Center (SNWC) focusing on program expansion and awareness while enhancing the relationship between CSU, the HEOC, and the SNWC. The associate director will assist with furthering the mission of the SNWC by developing and coordinating K-16 education and interactive learning opportunities for families from a diversity of backgrounds and developing pathways between the Spur and the college. The position will serve as the point-of-contact for outreach efforts to promote the health and STEM disciplines through the development, coordination, and delivery of educational events, activities, and presentations involving visits by schools and outside groups. A major duty will be to organize and prioritize requests for resources, space, technologies, and faculty time. Other major responsibilities will include recruiting visitors to the College (CVMBS) and University (CSU) from the region including the Denver-metro area and expanding partnerships and funding opportunities by working with the state legislature, state agencies, federal funding sources, and non-governmental organizations and foundations. Collaboration with CSU staff at the SNWC will be critical to developing coordinated educational programs that leverage the SNWC facilities as well as the CVMBS. Ongoing relationships with the SNWC will need to be developed by interacting with the existing planning committees and developing constituencies. A vital function of this position will be ensuring an integrative collaboration, engagement, and outreach across multiple CSU colleges, departments, and the SNWC. The position will work closely with faculty, staff, and students across academic departments and will be a collaborative team member of the CSU STEM Center and the Department of Biomedical Sciences housed in the HEOC. Frequent travel to the NWC in Denver and to local communities will be required. This position reports to the college’s Executive Associate Dean and will partner closely with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to implement policies directed at increasing student diversity within the academic pillars of the college.



Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, or related field with 2 years of relevant professional outreach work experience OR a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, or related field.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.


Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Professional experience with developing and coordinating outreach and engagement programs in higher education or K-12 education.
  • Professional experience in instructional design and/or curriculum development.
  • Professional experience in the health, medical or STEM field.
  • Professional experience with marketing and promotional strategies.
  • Professional experience with preparing and submitting grant proposals.

  • Collaborate with willing CVMBS faculty and staff to create additional successful summer camps/ institutes aimed at K-12 population, both locally and nationally
  • Develop outreach opportunities for local adult community members including ideas such as:
  • o Continuing teacher education.
    o Learning opportunities through the Fort Collins Recreator
    o North Side Aztlan Center
    o Poudre Library
    o Fort Collins Museum of Discovery
  • Build relationships with other outreach entities across CSU to see how CVMBS can partner. Examples include:
  • o Access Center and Alliance Partnership
    o Summer sessions office
    o Natural Sciences Outreach Center
    o STEM center
  • Contribute to the creation of CSU-wide outreach programming standards and coordinate efforts to improve efficiency

  • Collaborate with the communications team to create websites and marketing material highlighting successes in outreach. These materials can be used to attract more outreach opportunities as well as potential donors.
  • Partner with CVMBS development team and communications office to create an easy platform for donors to fund specific outreach activities (such as www.dollars4schools.org)
  • Research and submit grant proposals to fund outreach activities specifically targeting dollars benefitting underrepresented and diverse students
  • Collaborate with CVMBS development team to find scholarship funding for students from underrepresented backgrounds
