Associate Athletic Director for Health Details

The Associate Athletic Director for Health, Safety and Performance reports to the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician. Under the direction of the Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, the Deputy Director of Athletics for Administration and Policy and the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician, the Associate Athletic Director for Health, Safety and Performance will serve on the Department of Athletics and Recreation leadership team.

  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Duties:
    • Director for all Associate Directors of Athletic Training Services, Head Athletic Trainers, Senior Associate and Associate Certified Athletic Trainers. Also responsible for Sports Medicine aides, Certified Athletic Training students, residents or fellows
    • Assist the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician with development, updating, maintenance and implementation of policies and procedures regarding sports medicine programs.
    • Schedule Athletic Trainers to maintain athletic training clinic hours, practices, home events, and away competitions as appropriate.
    • Maintain sports medicine department budget
    • Maintain medical insurance procedures under the direction of the Director(s) for Financial Affairs in Student Affairs and Athletics.
    • Arrange student-athlete pre-participation physicals and medical referrals
    • Maintain required medical files and forms according to HIPAA and FERPA guidelines
    • Assist Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician in coordination of physician medical coverage for all varsity athletic activities
  • With the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician, provide oversight and manage the operational aspects of:
    • Sports Performance Department
    • Performance Nutrition Department
    • Performance Science Department (future)
  • Provide annual performance evaluations for the Associate Directors of Athletic Training Services, Head and Senior Associate Athletic Trainers. Assist the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician in Performance Excellence evaluations of others in Sports Medicine unit such as Directors of Football and Olympic Sports Performance, Director of Performance Nutrition, Performance Science and others as directed by the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician.
  • Maintain, in cooperation with the Director of Sports Medicine/ Head Team Physician, a network of medical consultants
  • Assist in the direction of the Athletics Wellness Committee (if applicable)
  • Assist in supporting mental health care for student-athletes and participate in monthly Student Athlete Care team meetings
  • Coordinate or assist in coordination of weekly, monthly and quarterly meetings
  • Oversight of Athletic Training Student education
  • Medical Duties:
    • Implement acute care, emergency care, injury/illness/condition evaluation, diagnosis, treatments, rehabilitation and prevention measures
    • Implement baseline performance and return to play objective testing
    • Make decisions regarding the ability of the student-athlete to safely engage in practice or competition following injury
    • Ensure the athletic training facilities AAAHC, BOC, Inc. and OSHA medical safeguard regulations
    • Primary AT responsibilities for an athletic team as assigned
  • Additional Duties:
    • Represent the department at university, national and professional level conferences as approved by the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician.
    • Attend athletic events to maintain maximum knowledge of each intercollegiate and club sport relevant to various assignments
    • Participate in special projects initiated by the Director of Sports Medicine/ Head Team Physician and/or Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, or through own creativity and innovation
    • Oversee and implement the NUDAR’s Crisis Management Protocol
    • Sport Administration oversight as assigned
    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher level of education
  • BOC, Inc Certification
  • State of Illinois Athletic Training License
  • 10 years prior management experience
