Assistant Director, Extension Nutrition Education Program

Responsible for the orientation, ongoing training, and supervision of field staff, and responsible for assisting the Program Director in planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, and reporting of the MSU Extension Nutrition Education program (SNAP-Ed and EFNEP).
Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist the Program Director in interpretation and implementation of federal guidance and planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, and reporting of the SNAP-Ed and EFNEP grant programs.
• Provide orientation, ongoing training, and supervision of nutrition educators in urban, rural, and indigenous communities.
• Provide leadership and guidance to field staff and program partners on nutrition and physical activity education and policy, systems, and environment-change strategies.
• Contribute to curriculum development, selection, adaptation and related training.
• Contribute to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices within the Nutrition Education Program.
• Travel to EFNEP/SNAP-Ed sites throughout the state for program review and site specific training and support; as well as to national and state conferences to represent the Nutrition Education Program.
• Utilize technological resources, including e-mail, online file storage systems, virtual meeting platforms, and other software to communicate with Extension and non-Extension personnel, assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies, and comply with all Extension, federal, state, and university reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, health education, education, or a closely related field.

• Demonstrated ability to lead groups including experience facilitating, teaching, organizing and providing training.

• Experience in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals, groups, and community organizations.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Master’s degree in a related field.

• Experience leading, managing, and teaching nutrition education programs.

• Experience hiring, supervising, and training staff.

• Experience supporting health programs in tribal communities.

• Previous experience with Extension.

• Demonstrate evidence of good judgment, flexibility and innovativeness in order to respond to the changing needs of the clientele of the program and the agencies involved.
• Be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Will be able to utilize a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds (including low-income audiences), and a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Position Special Requirements/Additional InformationExtensive travel throughout the state of Montana and occasional travel throughout the country, handling and operating a variety of educational equipment.

The ProgramSupplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) SNAP-Ed uses educational strategies accompanied by policy, systems, and environment-change interventions demonstrated to facilitate food and physical activity choices and other nutrition-related behaviors that support the health of individuals and families with low income. SNAP-Ed participants are Montana families with children, youth, seniors, singles, and individuals with developmental disabilities with low income. Education and skill-building lessons are presented with practical information and tips for choosing healthier foods, preparing meals, learning food safety practices, modeling good food choices for family members, and incorporating ways to be more physically active.

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) For over 50 years, MSU EFNEP has assisted Montanans with low income in acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets. Ultimately, the goal is to contribute to personal development and improvement of the total family diet and nutritional well-being. EFNEP targets youth, young adults, and adults with children under the age of 19, and reaches individuals through series of sessions and demonstrations. Through EFNEP, participants can build self-confidence, increase food security, and improve their nutritional health and well-being.
