Job Description: Under the general supervision of the Director, provides ASL/English interpreting services to the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services at Brown University during the work day in a variety of settings which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Meetings
  • Field trips
  • Seminars
  • Student counseling sessions
  • Extracurricular activities
Other meetings or events as assigned Job Qualifications: Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • At least two years’ experience interpreting in a university setting, experience as a designated interpreter in an academic setting preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication techniques, organizational skills and able to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with students, faculty, staff, the public and external agencies.
  • Willingness to occasionally work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Cultural competence across the diverse range of students, faculty and staff
  • Maintains professional licenses, memberships and certifications in the field.
  • Must possess at least ONE of the following credentials or equivalent:
    • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - National Association of the Deaf (NIC) Certification
    • Certificate of Interpreting (CI)
    • Certificate of Transliteration (CT)
    • Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC)
  • National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Interpreter Certification Program
    • Certificate of Competence Level IV (Advanced)
    • Certificate of Competence Level V (Master)
  • MUST be Rhode Island state licensed
Job Competencies:
  • The interpreter must be able to interpret from ASL into spoken English at a level that accurately and appropriately represents someone at the level of Associate Director at an Ivy League university.
  • Adhere to the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct (CPC), applying discretion and using their best skill and judgment regarding each assigned task.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication techniques, organizational skills and able to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with students, faculty, staff, the public and external agencies.
  • Cultural competence across the diverse range of students, faculty and staff.
