This is a state-of-the-art laboratory, operating twenty-four hours per day, where you will be able to utilize your training, experience and skills to learn and grow. The AP Lab performs over 90,000 cases per year. There are on-site IHC and Molecular labs and a significant opportunity for professional development. The lab is accredited by CAP, JCAHO; certified by CLIA and registered with the FDA. GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE: Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology and cytology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to insure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Uses the laboratory computer system and equipment. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma. Preferred: Two years of college course work completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum or equivalent with 12 hours Science credits. Preferred: Associates of Science, Applied Science (or similar). One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ^ Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc. ^ Full registration for outreach specimens with orders for Surg Path, Cytology and Molecular pathology procedures. ^ Includes insurance entry and verification. Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application. ^ Prints labels and work lists. Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff and pathologists as needed Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Pathology and Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety. . ^ Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques. ^ Proper use of required laboratory equipment and performs necessary quality control and maintenance of assigned lab equipment and records. Assists with basic or designated Histology procedures. ^ Cleans and stocks all work areas. ^ Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists as needed. Monitors inventory for Pathology areas. ^ Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports. ^ Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. ^ Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. ^ Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. ^ Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. ^ Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. ^ Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.
