Animal Control Officer -2nd Shift Details

Harris County - Houston, TX

Employment Type : Full-Time

Under the direction of the Field Supervisor, and in accordance with the Animal Control Officer Training Manual, the Animal Control Officer responds to citizens' requests for animal control services.

Field Operations


  • Requests for Service - Responds to citizen requests for service as outlined in the Animal Control Officer Training Manual.
  • Bite Cases – Responsible for investigating animal bites, advising both owner and victim of procedures, and documenting in the Bite Case Book.
  • Fleet Services – Responsible for the safe operation of County equipment and vehicles including daily maintenance, cleaning, and disinfecting.
  • Kennel/Data Entry – Assign kennels to impounded animals. Inputs animal information and photographs in the database. Ensures that animal info is linked to the correct photo for the website. Also, enter unassigned calls and other information as needed.
  • Dangerous Dogs – Responsible for the inspection of Dangerous Dog facilities to ensure that they comply with Harris County Regulations.
  • Court duty – Appears in court as required taking necessary records and documents. Must display a professional image and attitude.
  • Special Assignments – Completes special assignments as needed i.e. assisting law enforcement officers with evictions, arrests, and drug busts.
Public Relations
  • Leash Law – Responsible for the daily education of adults and children about Harris County leash laws, animal safety, and responsible pet ownership.
  • Events – Responsible for attending special events.
Dispatch
  • Backup Dispatcher – Serves as a backup dispatcher for the 2nd shift field supervisor.
  • Trap Agreements – Responsible for data entry of trap agreements and trap logs.
  • Telephones – Responsible for answering incoming calls from law enforcement and the public.
  • Bite Cases – Sequences bite cases as needed.
  • Verify Logs – Verify the correct number of animals are on each ACO log.
Other
  • Other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One year of work experience providing direct customer service.
  • Basic knowledge of dog and cat care is required.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willing to learn and show proficiency in Chameleon Animal Care Software within 6 months of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required for daily officer duties which include field investigations.
  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs., be in good physical health, able to tolerate high heat and humidity for extended periods of time outdoors while working in a variety of urban and natural environments.
  • Successful completion of the Department of State Health Services' Basic Animal Control Officer's Certification within one year of employment and maintain that certification

Preferences

  • Associate of Science (AS): Law Enforcement Degree Overview
  • Department of State Health Services' Basic Animal Control Officer's Certification.
  • Three years of experience as an Animal Control officer in a public health organization.
  • Proficiency in Chameleon Animal Care Software.
