Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Ambulatory Care Technician for the Department of Medicine – Division of Infectious Disease within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Ambulatory Care Technician (ACT) will provide medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. This position also assists with receptionist, telephone, and filing duties.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Under clinical supervision, performs delegated procedures, common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.
  • Performs telephone and in-person screenings.
  • Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical data.
  • As directed by physician, administers approved medications, including vaccinations, via intramuscular and subcutaneous injections as may be delegated under state regulations.
  • Assists provider in identified patient procedures, treatments and examinations (preparation, positioning, supplies, equipment).
  • Appropriately obtains and manages specimens, including: labeling, form completion, transport to laboratories, and log maintenance.
  • Performs quality control for waived testing.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and implements emergency procedures according to clinic guidelines.
  • Administers first aid, CPR, and maintains emergency equipment and supplies.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Rutgers University requires all new employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the employee a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation from a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Must have experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
  • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting.
  • NJDHSS HIV counselor certification.
  • Knowledge of Newark community.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish).

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.
  • Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
