Our Alternative Markets is seeking a Senior Underwriting Specialist, Specialty General Liability to join its growing and dynamic team in Windsor, CT. Highly qualified applicants from other locations will also be considered.
Position Summary:
The Senior Underwriting Specialist is responsible for identifying, soliciting, underwriting and selling new and retaining renewal Specialty GL accounts that drive profitable growth that align with our appetite and mix goals. Manage assigned book of business, generally with highly technical complexity and coordination while providing informal leadership through coaching in a team-based environment.
This is a Full-time, Exempt role.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:- Responsible for the execution of Hanover SGL strategy within the Alternative Markets team. This may include building on distribution strategy, triage of submission flow, review of risks to ensure Hanover is using capacity wisely and maintaining agency relationships and attaining profit and growth goals for the unit.
- Develop solid relationships with partnered agents. Assist with driving new business flow using a solid understanding of the agents’ business plans and Hanover’s value proposition and strategy.
- Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of accounts with partnered agents for submission flow.
- Knows and applies advanced technical underwriting skills and concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage implications, pricing, loss analysis for profitable business.
- Demonstrates ability to properly leverage competencies, act as a resource, and build long-term, profitable and mutually beneficial relationships with agencies, internal management, and external resources.
- Constructs and executes portfolio business plans independently through organized workflow & desk management, which may include special projects.
- Efficiently coordinate internally and externally on highly complex risks.
- Assures compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements and ensures the integrity of underwriting discipline by identifying underwriting issues.
- Engage at the customer level for the most complex and prominent accounts within their territory.
- Collect market intelligence (price, product, services); advocate for change as needed.
- Assist in the development of new product capabilities, emerging market opportunities, and identifying growth opportunities.
- Increase collaboration with Specialty leadership, Hanover Specialty Industrial Property, Hanover Programs, Agency markets leadership (Regional Presidents, Field teams) and home office resources (product, operations, IT, claims) to unravel opportunities.
- Assist in the development of new product capabilities, emerging market opportunities, and identifying growth opportunities.
Position Requirements:- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in industry experience required, professional designations preferred.
- 5-7+ years Specialty GL underwriting experience.
- 5-7+ years’ experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.
- Proficient in ability to identify, analyze and solve problems and manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong proficiency with specific knowledge requirements in the areas of underwriting, book management, marketing and product development.
- Demonstrates ability to adapt quickly to change, exercise influence, and act as a change advocate being open to new and different ways of thinking.
- Viewed as an informal leader amongst the team. Open to and proactively shares knowledge and expertise with peers, management and leadership.
- Excellent communication skills are essential; effective face-to-face interactions and presentations to groups, as well as strong phone skills, along with sound written communications, including impeccable follow through on commitments.
