Adult Basic Education Technology Instructor/Office Assistant Details

RATE OF PAY/BENEFITS - This part-time position (no more than 28 hours per week) will pay $19 per hour. Hours of work are 8 a.m. - 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. as needed Monday thru Friday. The selected candidate will participate in the Kansas Public Employee Retirement System (KPERS). There are no other benefits associated with this position. This is a grant-funded position.

SUMMARY

As Technology Instructor, this position will provide instruction for all components of NorthStar, the Adult Education technology curriculum software. As Office Assistant, will supply clerical assistance for Adult Education operations. This position will also administer placement tests for both the Adult Education Program and the College as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Provide general clerical services for the Adult Education department.

2. Operate a variety of office equipment such as photocopiers, telephone systems, etc. Maintain equipment, computers, fax machine, copier, and a clean environment, etc.

3. Create spreadsheets, coordinate correspondence, manage databases and reports, and document using desktop publishing software.

4. Update and maintain student data, reports, and attendance.

5. Instruct students in the computer lab with usage of North Star curriculum, college information, and testing. Maintain a "study atmosphere" in the lab.

6. Project a positive and professional image for HCC with a polite, helpful mannerism.

7. Greet visitors and welcome them to The Learning Center and maintain an orientation list for the Atchison Center.

8. Assist visitors with location information, staff and classroom information, etc.

9. Assist with maintaining the AESAS database.

10. Retrieve data from various sources and regional Adult Ed Programs.

11. Prepare Orientation Books and other materials as needed.

12. Review records and update advisors in Atchison and the Region on student testing.

13. Administer placement tests (TABE, Work Keys, Practice Tests, and assist students in enrolling for the GED test.

14. Prepare signage and maintain testing room schedule.

15. Maintain strict confidentiality on all information.

16. Promote and market Adult Education through website maintenance, social media, signage and direct mail.

17. Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as education, computer science, etc., required. Two years relevant work experience or demonstrated proficiency in data and word processing. Prior experience in an office setting desired. Must have strong computer skills and be able to learn new computer programs easily.

Language Skills
Strong listening, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, memos, and governmental regulations. Ability to compose and type routine reports and correspondence. Must have good communication and people skills. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, tutors, groups, and employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. Bookkeeping skills a plus.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have good organizing, coordinating, and decision-making abilities and the ability to retain composure under pressure. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with students and individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds required. Ability to work without close supervision and handle a varied job situation. Should have a service oriented and positive attitude toward students, employees, and community people who interact with the College.
