The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking an Administrative Assistant to provide professional support to the Division of Animal and Food Industry Services (AFIS), including the State Veterinarian and Deputy Director, who are responsible for monitoring animal health and welfare and ensuring food safety statewide through the activities of four major program areas. These areas include agricultural laboratories, food and produce safety and dairy inspection, animal welfare, and veterinary services. Duties include providing support by performing an extensive variety of administrative assignments such as scheduling appointments and making travel arrangements; maintaining filing systems; reviewing and processing paperwork, travel requests, reimbursements, purchasing, and vouchers/requisitions; and maintaining office supplies and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications Comprehensive knowledge of current business and administrative procedures as related to those of an executive or regulatory office. Demonstrated ability to handle a wide diversity of responsibilities; to prioritize work assignments; to effectively meet deadlines and enhance operating efficiency; to independently make decisions and recommend solutions based on policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with and interact with agency employees, other government agencies, and the general public involving a wide range of personalities. Proficiency using computers including the full MS Office Suite. The selected individual must be organized and detail oriented and have current or recent experience in a similar position that requires handling multiple priorities and working independently to manage work through an executive office. H.S. Diploma/GED required.
Preferred Qualifications Related education, training or experience in agriculture, food science, animal health, or a regulatory environment.
Special Requirements Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check and complete and submit a Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) which will be entered into the Federal E-Verify system to confirm identity and work authorization. If the selected individual is a military veteran, they must also submit a copy of their DD214 form.
