The Undergraduate Academic Advisor/Graduate Program Support at the UW Tacoma Milgard School of Business will serve as a member of the Milgard staff providing academic advising for undergraduate Business majors and support to the Master of Science in Accounting (MSAcc).

This position will utilize professional knowledge and experience with University resources to empower students to identify interests and match personal strengths with educational and career opportunities. Important aspects of the work include knowledge of the course offerings, degree requirements, understanding of the relationship between education and career, attention to detail, frequent contact with the University’s administrative system, and active engagement with the faculty and staff of the Milgard School of Business.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Undergraduate Advising:

Advise current business students on graduation requirements, assist them in identifying pathways to graduation, and opportunities that enhance their education (e.g., internship, study abroad, clubs and organizations)

Advise UW Tacoma premajor students on admission requirements and general information about the business school

Evaluate Bachelor of Arts Business Administration (BABA) application files, make admission decisions, or refer for additional review

Assist students in the interpretation of program and university requirements and policies

Guide students through University systems to avoid or overcome administrative problems

Monitor quarterly registration, following up with students who have not yet registered

Follow up with students experiencing academic difficulty

Serve as ad-hoc member of the Milgard Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC)

Work with the BABA team to provide recommendations to UPC that promote student success

In collaboration with BABA team, provide recommendations for annual course offerings, identifying courses that may create registration and graduation timing issues for students

Refer and support students in connecting with resources to support their personal and educational needs

Collaborate with Milgard School centers to promote their minors and cocurricular experiences

Establish and maintain working relationships with pre-major advisors and Milgard team members and campus colleagues (e.g. Undergraduate Academic Advising, Student and Enrollment Services, Equity and Diversity, International Student Services, Global Honors, Study Abroad, etc.) to offer joint programs which help students integrate their academic, career and personal goals.

Serve on Milgard and university committees as needed

Offer advising opportunities in different modalities to serve diverse needs of the student body (online drop-in, remote advising, canvas site, etc.)

Participate in Milgard and campus events

Graduate Program Support for MSAcc:

Serve as liaison with the UW Graduate School

Collaborate with the accounting programs team to advise students on degree and graduation requirements

Coordinate the quarterly registration process

Assist students in understanding the program policies as well as UW Graduate School academic policies

Conduct quarterly check of successful academic progress

Collaborate with the accounting programs team to support the cocurricular needs of the MSAcc students; participate in program orientations and student engagement events

Assist the Accounting Program Manager in the coordination of Milgard hooding ceremony

Collaborate with other UW Tacoma graduate program advisors and the accounting programs team to support needs of UW Tacoma’s graduate student population

Connect MSAcc students with resources that support their educational and personal needs

Identify undergraduate Accounting graduates who meet criteria for the MSAcc Direct Admit program and provide official notification to students

Compile data in support of accounting initiatives and program accreditation

Assist in new student onboarding

Assist with managing MSAcc website, program Canvas site, yearly catalog editor

Coordinates with International Student and Scholar Services office in regards to international students

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in business, education, social sciences or a related field AND two years experience to include:

Experience working directly with students, such as advising or student services

Attention to detail, and strong written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently and work a flexible schedule with some evening and/or weekend work

Proven ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team serving a diverse population of students, staff, and/or faculty

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in student development administration, counseling, higher education administration, business or a related field

Knowledgeable in advising procedures with a background in student development

Three years of advising experience

Understanding of curriculum

Knowledgeable or experience with UW: advising and registration systems; policies and procedures at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and reporting and data systems
