Responsibilities:


  • Assist undergraduate students in identifying educational and career goals by offering general advisement, academic planning support, graduation planning, and interpretation of institutional policies and procedures. Special emphasis to be placed on freshmen as well as underrepresented and historically disadvantaged students.
  • Serve as primary advisor to new incoming freshmen and transfer students. Introduce and orient students to their curriculum requirements, academic planning tools, and institutional resources. Advise and register students for their first semester and first year at New York Tech.
  • Serve as the primary support for student success initiatives targeted to undergraduate students; monitor academic progress by way of Early Alerts and Progress Reports; provide guidance and mentorship related to each student’s personal success plan. Manage a caseload of students on academic probation and provide proactive advisement.
  • Serve as student advocate and act as liaison between student and faculty/chair; assist faculty with students of concern; facilitate class permissions, substitutions, graduation approvals; Connect students with resources such as tutoring, Counseling & Wellness, Career Services, Clubs/Organizations, etc.
  • Provide support to the Peer Advising program and serve as a resource to peer advisors who assist continuing students with navigating resources, creating class schedules, and registering online.
  • Become proficient with New York Tech’s advising software (EAB's Navigate), maintain comprehensive student reports, notes, and relevant attachments. Serve as a resource to campus partners for support and training.
  • Assist in all other departmental initiatives and campus-wide committees and events such as New Student Orientation, Preview Day, Open House, and Commencement.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree required and a master’s degree preferred. At least one to three years of experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic advising/counseling role.
A strong knowledge of academic advising, including policies, academic disciplines, coursework, and graduation requirements is especially important. Experience working with underrepresented and historically disadvantaged students is preferred.
Must have a working knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Google docs and sheets. Must have experience with conducting virtual meetings and/or using videoconferencing software, such as Zoom. Experience with PeopleSoft and/or EAB Navigate highly desirable.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required to effectively work with staff, students, and establish rapport with faculty members and academic staff. Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural diversity and equity. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, required. Excellent customer-service skills required as well. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
