We are seeking an AMBULATORY CARE NURSE Team Lead to be an integral member of the healthcare team and provide leadership and direct/indirect care to patients at the Duke Children’s Specialty Services of Raleigh (23 Sunnybrook Road Raleigh, NC-work office location), the Duke Children’s of Apex (1545 Orchard Villas Lane in Apex, NC), Duke Children’s Specialty Services of Brier Creek (10211 Alm Street Raleigh, NC) and Duke Children’s Specialty Services of Brier Creek (10207 Cerny Street Raleigh, NC) clinic locations. Clinic hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and one Saturday per month 8:00am-12:00pm at Sunnybrook for immunotherapy. Schedule varies with weekday start times between 7:30-8:30 am and end times between 4:00-last patient at one of the four mentioned clinics. Saturday schedule is on a rotating basis, generally 3 Saturdays per year. This position offers the opportunity to lead a diverse team and develop nursing skills in multiple pediatric specialties.

Job Duties:
- Plan, provide and document professional nursing care in ambulatory settings, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures, under the supervision of the nurse manager, charge nurse or practice manager.
- Collect and analyze patient data, make recommendations for nursing care plans, evaluate nursing care provided, document and communicate appropriately nursing actions taken and patient responses.
- Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
- Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of patient care and serve as a team leader.
- Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources.
- Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
- Support the development of other staff and formal learners. Participate in the identification of clinical, operational and safety related performance improvement opportunities.
- Participate in clinic or entity level performance improvement activities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
The Ambulatory Care Lead RN responsibilities include:
- Coordinate with the clinic and nursing leadership to ensure the work is accomplished effectively.
- First line of support for staff, physicians and other related providers on service-specific clinical issues.
- Collaborate with the manager on clinical and non-clinical issues (employee relations, individual behaviors, physician relationships, etc.).
- Support for the clinic/practice when the manager is unavailable.
- Supervise, direct, coach and mentor assigned core group of staff.
Clinic duties include but not limited to:
- Rotate between the four clinic locations and Pediatric specialties: Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Endocrine, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology and Urology (and others as added) and maintain competencies to work in these areas.
- Perform patient intake, prepare patients for examinations and procedures, explain treatment procedures to patients and their family member and promote and document patient/family understanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in the plan of care.
- Perform POCT to include fingerstick BS, fingerstick Hg A1C, UA and urine HCG.
- Perform and assess allergy skin testing.
- Administer immunotherapy.
- Assist with circumcisions.
- Assist with ARMS (Anorectal Manometry).
- Administer po, sq, IM and topical medications to patients as ordered by providers or by established protocols following the six rights of medication administration including flu vaccines.
- Perform spirometry testing.
- Obtain and transmit 12 lead electrocardiograms.
- Place halter monitors including all steps to register patient.
- Performs tasks such as set up for clinical procedures or other miscellaneous appropriate tasks within scope of practice.
- Assist in the maintenance of the physical environment of the clinic.
- Assist other nursing personnel (licensed and unlicensed) in the delivery of patient care – delegating tasks and training/supervising activities.
- Perform on occasion as Triage nurse, duties include but not limited to managing the clinic Nurse Triage phone line.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.
- Requires graduation from an accredited BSN program.
- Position requires 3 years of nursing experience.
- Previous leadership experience in ambulatory care setting and with pediatric specialty patient care preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and all unlicensed assistive personnel
- Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
- Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedures
- Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others
- Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
- Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up
- Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
