Required Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate college student in an agricultural education, agricultural communications, horticulture, animal science, agribusiness, agronomy, natural resources major or related field.
- Must not be graduating Spring of 2021.
Additional Requirements:
- Personal cell phone that can be used, as needed, for work purposes.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some evenings or weekends.
- Access to a reliable internet connection and ability to work remotely when Extension offices are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of agriculture, horticulture or food systems.
- Proven communication skills, which includes both written and verbal.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and Google Suite programs.
- Ability to learn additional software systems for educational use.
- An independent self-starter with the ability to be flexible and work on a variety of different tasks.

Compensation: $13 per hour. Work related mileage and expenses will be reimbursed. Housing will not be provided.

About this internship program
The AFNR Internship Program is an educational opportunity for undergraduate college students to learn about agriculture and University of Minnesota Extension. The three main components of the internship are completing a project created by the supervising Extension educator; networking with other interns, educators and researchers in Extension; and learning about the roles and positions that work together to achieve Extension’s mission. Interns work 30 to 40 hours a week for ten to 12 weeks over the summer. There is flexibility with interns’ availability based on their school schedule. There is one application process for multiple intern positions. Selection for each position will be based on candidates’ qualifications as well their interest in the projects and fit with career goals.
THESE POSITIONS WILL:
1) Assist with educational programs and make them accessible and inviting to diverse participants.
2) Build relationships and networks in the agricultural field.
3) Develop and deliver relevant educational communications through newspaper, radio, and social media outlets.
4) Develop an educational project that cultivates professional development, for example:
- Work with Extension educators on researching topics, creating needs assessments, developing curriculum, conducting focus groups or creating educational pieces for media to support program development.
- Research and answer technical assistance inquiries through phone, email and in person communication. The AFNR Intern will catalogue popular topics by month.
- Correspond with presenters, farmers, non-profits, agency staff, Extension educators and Extension specialists through email, mail and phone.
- Foster and strengthen relationships with stakeholders, agencies and organizations that support work in communities.
- Assist with event logistics and marketing for educational events.
- Assist with on-farm research, sampling, site visits and assessments.
- Be a part of the local office team, assist with the county fair and other general office duties.
Due to COVID-19, Extension employees are working remotely. This is a temporary situation and does not constitute a telecommute agreement. You must have reliable access to the internet at your remote location.
