Position Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position will assist the Y in implementing the City of Los Angeles and YMCA private/public Community Empowerment Hub (CEH) Learning Pod Program partnership. This position will support school-age distance learning support programs, by ensuring a high quality program and by working directly with children and youth to support their academic and educational goals, with a focus on helping children and youth master skill development; implement program curriculum and lead recreational and enrichment activities; ensuring that current health and safety precaution and physical distancing requirements are maintained. This position consists of tutoring school-age children, both in-person (in group cohorts) and virtually (video conferencing with two or more children). This position will promote and support the potential of all youth in programs and facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience. This position will provide a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. This position is funded by a grant provided by the City of Los Angeles. This position is temporary and is subject to end at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 18 years or older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Completed course work in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Child & Adolescent Development, Recreation, Education, Sociology or Psychology or its equivalent in academic preparation and/or experience, preferred
  • Experience working in school-age, afterschool, academic, school-based, tutoring or camp programs, with an emphasis of academic and educational preparation for children and youth, strongly preferred.
  • Strong character values (respect, responsibility, honesty, caring); strong communication skills; emotional maturity
  • Current First Aid, Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications. TB Test.

Responsibilities
  • Support the City of Los Angeles and YMCA private/public CEH Learning Pod Program partnership by assisting children with logging in to technology, ensuring children are attentive and engaged in their online classes, providing support and assistance in help them to complete schoolwork and homework, managing their daily class schedule, educational and academic tutoring and leading enrichment and recreation activities, during out-of-school time, etc., if applicable.
  • Managing a cohort of up to 12 children.
  • Managing the Learning Pod Program group cohort and environment; maintain all health orders related to COVID-19: physical distancing, face coverings, hand washing breaks, sanitizing and disinfecting, limiting shared equipment, visual health assessments, etc.
  • Interacting and tutoring school-age children via a virtual platform/video conferencing in 1-on-2+ sessions (1 Learning Pod Tutor interacting virtually/video conferences with at least two (2) or more children for the purpose of providing academic tutoring) and in accordance with YMCA safety precautions and guidelines for virtual/video conferencing tutoring between YMCA staff and participants.
  • Implements high quality YMCA CEH Learning Pod program. Ensures high quality programs through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families, with a focus on educational and academic preparation for children and youth.
  • Full understanding of federal, state, county and local Public Health regulations as it relates to providing YMCA CEH Learning Pod programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Responsible for ensuring assigned YMCA CEH Learning Pod program operates in full compliance with regulations at all times.
  • Develops positive relations with community as a YMCA CEH representative.
  • Ensures close visual supervision of children, following ratios based on specific program. No child is left unsupervised at any time. No YMCA staff person is left alone with one single child, at any time.
    • (1) Learning Pod Tutor for every cohort of up to a maximum of 12 children.
  • Help children manage behavior using a positive approach, including proactive strategies, redirection and using constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
  • Actively supports and is committed to inclusion and compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), where appropriate.
  • Support planning and implementing program curriculum and activities that are focused on education, academics, distance learning support and skill development, that is developmentally appropriate, consistent with the YMCA values and established guidelines, and within the guidelines of the YMCA's program standards and the current health orders related to COVID-19.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards, maintains site and equipment, and maintains required program records in accordance with federal, state, county and local Public Health regulations, funding terms and conditions, and YMCA expectations.
  • Ensures completion of all administrative paperwork, as assigned, including grant reporting and documentation required for the YMCA CEH Learning Pod grant.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child. Communicates with Learning Pods Branch Coordinator regarding child's development.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents.
  • Attends and participates in family events, program activities, staff meetings and trainings, as assigned.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies. Follows reporting procedures and proactively responds to situations to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
  • Understands and complies with current federal, state, county, local regulations, YMCA policies and procedures at all times.
  • Maintains positive relationship with parents, other YMCA team members and community partners. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
