Position Summary
The University of New Mexico’s Center for Memory & Aging is seeking a self-starting, motivated candidate to act in a dual capacity as clinician and research manager. The Center for Memory & Aging research involves a suite of longitudinal studies of older research participants with and without cognitive problems, including collection of MRI, cognitive, neurological, blood, and CSF data.
The selected candidate would be an integral team member that will perform a unique mix of clinical and research management tasks. Routine duties would include obtaining detailed medical and family history, reviewing patient records for past and present health issues, especially for MRI clearance, performing physical and neurological examinations and evaluations on research participants; conducting structured clinical interviews (e.g., Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR)) and cognitive exams as prescribed by specified research protocol as well as drawing blood and performing/assisting with other medical procedures. Additionally, the selected candidate will be involved in recruitment, screening and enrollment of research participants, as well as, the collection, compilation, and management of study data.
This position will be engaged in outreach within Albuquerque as well as locations around the state of New Mexico. The selected candidate may serve with the research staff as lead clinician at remote sites running participants through research visits. The position may also be involved in educational or focus group endeavors as part of the larger grant goals.
Travel: Position will require occasional out of state travel as well as regular travel to the Zuni Pueblo or other locations within NM. The travel may require overnight stays.
The individual in this position must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community, particularly older adults with cognitive difficulties and their families. Position will require drawing of blood samples in preparation of storage and shipping, as well as conducting other clinical assessments, such as physical exams and vitals.
TERM APPOINTMENT; FUNDING AVAILABLE THROUGH 07/31/2022; CONTINUANCE BEYOND THAT DATE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNDING.

Conditions of Employment
- CPR Certified.
- May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
- UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
- May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
- Must maintain certification status.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required. Certification/Licensure Eligible for New Mexico certification as a Physician's Assistant OR State of New Mexico Certified Nurse Practitioner or certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference given to applicants who also have the following (must be detailed in Resume or Cover Letter)
Experience with:
- conducting physical and/or neurological exams, structured clinical interviews, as well as medical/family medical histories
- drawing blood from older adults
- conducting ECGs and collecting vitals
- recruiting, scheduling and maintaining rapport with older adult patients and their families
- developing rapport with culturally and ethnically diverse participants
- administering research assessments such as depression inventories and cognitive assessments
- utilizing Powerchart and other clinical systems
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- IRB and other regulatory documentation
- providing health education or conducting focus groups
- Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders
