The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is one of the largest academic units on the UW Seattle campus, employing over 1400 tenure-track and research faculty, in 43 departments and centers, and generating an average $120 million dollars in sponsored research each year. ASIAN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE ADMINISTRATOR
The Department of Asian Languages and Literature seeks a dynamic, proactive, and engaged Administrator with a broad range of administrative and management skills, including Human Resources, Finance, Advancement, and Facilities. We are looking for an individual with the dynamism and vision to work with the Department’s highly regarded teaching and research faculty and its skilled staff complement.

Reporting to and collaborating with the Chair of Asian L&L, the person filling this role is expected to act independently, boldly, and thoughtfully to help fulfill the Department’s educational mission while respecting the University's policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Human Resources (20%): Assists in the recruitment and hiring of faculty, instructors, and teaching assistants, and oversees faculty reviews and promotions. In overseeing faculty recruitment, the Administrator assures compliance with UW and INS rules and regulations for faculty searches.

Finance (20%): Manages and monitors all budgets. The Administrator provides projections and spending trends and alerts the Chair to potential allocation deficits or unusual expenditure patterns. The Administrator will play a vital role in the processes related to the transition from UW’s current state through Financial Transformation.

Sponsored Research (15%): Assists faculty and follows the entire grant process, from pre-award through close-out.

General Administration (20%): Oversees day-to-day departmental operations. The Administrator is the chief liaison between the Department and other campus units.

Supervisory (15%): Supervises the office staff, assigns and monitors work, conducts performance reviews, and initiates corrective action as necessary.

Facilities and Equipment (5%): Prepares and analyzes Department space and equipment requirements. Ensures compliance with University, State, and Federal policies and procedures regarding space and workplace safety. Serves as Department COVID-19 supervisor.

Other duties as assigned (5%).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Four or more years of experience with higher education administrative or academic program management work
  • Demonstrated experience in budget projection, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • A track record of managing staff and building effective teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse populations using multiple communication methods to manage and build long-term working relationships
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated collaborative work style and ability to function effectively in a diverse workplace
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
