Job Summary
Directs the day-to-day administrative, operational and financial domains of the Critical Care Medicine regional program in consultation with the Assistant Vice President and Physician Leadership. Develops strategies and standards for the department in line with hospital senior management and MedStar Medical Group management expectations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Training:
Master’s Degree in business or related field.
Experience:
5 years progressively more responsible job-related experience.
License/Cert/Reg:
No special certification, registration or licensure required. Lean training preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to establish goals and policies for area of responsibility subject to senior management review. Broad decision-making authority. High level of problem solving due to the complexity of the situations encountered. Strong interpersonal skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with business unit policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Conducts reviews of departmental policies and procedures, making/recommending changes as necessary/appropriate for assigned cost centers to achieve their goals/performance objectives/expectations.
- Creates a strategic plan for the department/assigned cost centers in concert with Physician Leadership, AVP and management, which includes ongoing daily activities as well as special projects which provide vision to/for the various departments. Defines roles so there is a clear understanding of performance objectives and expectations.
- Develops accounting systems in conjunction with senior finance leadership and administers budgets for assigned cost centers. Analyzes budget variances and statistical reports performing financial analyses and financial expertise to achieve and/or maintain established financial objectives. Identifies problems and advises the Regional Chair, AVP, and MedStar Medical Group leadership of causes for variance and implements corrective measures as appropriate.
- Develops proposals for new lines of business, which include writing proposals and developing business plans, including data analysis and visualization.
- Develops, implements, monitors, and assists with strategic long-range planning and forecasting programs in conjunction with Physician Leadership, AVP, and MedStar Medical Group leadership to maintain assigned objectives. Reviews and analyzes internal and external financial trends and activities.
- Directs the day-to day fiscal and administrative operations of assigned departments including, but not limited to: budget and finance, human resources, short and long-range planning, and legal and regulatory compliance.
- Interviews, hires, orients, trains, counsels, and as necessary disciplines/discharges subordinate personnel. Develops overall comprehensive recruitment and retention strategy/ies to ensure staffing levels are safe and fit the needs of the department.
- Collaborates with Finance, Physician Unified Billing, and outsourced coding agents (if applicable) regarding assigned departments’ billing and collections to maximize revenue. Ensures accurate chart flow, follow up on revenue cycle, and monitoring of suspended charts for further documentation.
- Participates in the MedStar’s quantitative measures of success indicators such as patient, physician and employee satisfaction, accreditation’s, variance reports, etc., and responds appropriately to the results.
- Provides leadership in the development and growth of subordinates and staff which will includes ongoing training and education program(s). Remains current in own knowledge of business/medical administration through own reading, participation at seminars and training, etc.
- Serves as the Departmental Financial Manager (DFM) for assigned cost centers.
- Serves on Critical Care Medicine committees as the administrative dyad to the regional/entity Physician Lead. Provides administrative, financial, project management support, analysis and direction for committees as assigned.
- Works with MedStar Medical Group and Physician Leadership regarding actions necessary for physician and PA recruitment and retention.
- Assumes lead role in negotiating and administering major contracts for goods, services and equipment with selected vendors and provides expenditure and contract status reports to management in consultation with Purchasing. Manages selected purchasing engagements by participating in negotiation of contracts with large vendors and directs procurement of selected, large capital equipment of assigned cost centers
- Conducts assessment(s) of the department’s facilities/needs and makes recommendations/changes concerning space and/or remodeling and to resolve/improve existing throughput issues and to improve the overall operation of the department.
