Job Summary

The IAM National Benefit Funds Office is conducting a search for an Assistant Controller to support and assist the Controller and Director of Accounting and Finance for the IAM National Pension Fund, IAM National 401K Fund, and the National IAM Benefit Trust Fund (the “Funds”) located in Washington, D.C.

The IAM National Pension Fund is the 5th largest multiemployer pension fund in the United States. The Fund has approximately 13 billion in assets and over 1,500 contributing employer locations. The IAMNPF has provided valuable retirement benefits for members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and their families for over 50 years. The I.A.M. National Pension Fund (“NPF) is a collectively bargained labor-management pension trust fund established under the authority of the Taft-Hartley Act and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (“ERISA”). The Fund is governed by a joint Board of Trustees (the “NPF Trustees”), which consists of an equal number of union and employer representatives.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintaining the General Ledgers for each of the three Funds
  • Timely and accurate monthly close for each Fund
  • Monthly reconciliations
  • Monthly internal reporting
  • Manage General Ledger staff of five.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of two Benefit Application Systems to be used by the Funds and relied on for recordation of transactions.
  • Oversee the Accounts Payable process for each of the three Funds, including
  • Review of invoices and oversight of payment runs
  • Adherence to Cost Sharing Agreements and Budget
  • Oversee the Cash Receipts process for each of the three Funds, including
  • Coordinate with other Departments and Accounting Teams
  • Adherence to related policies for cash and types of deposits
  • Lead the Department’s efforts in the Annual Audits of each of the three Funds
  • Manage Prepared-by-Client (PBC) lists for the three annual audits
  • Coordinate with other Managers throughout the Fund Office regarding certain items requested
  • Assist in preparing Financial Statements, Supporting Schedules, Disclosures, Footnotes, etc.
  • Support the Controller and Director of Finance in interfacing with the outside auditors
  • Lead the Department’s efforts in the Annual Tax filings, as applicable, of the three Funds
  • Form 5500, Form 990, Form 990T
  • Form 1099R, Form 1042S, Form 1099NEC, Third Party Sick Pay
  • Preparation and review of reports required for Board of Trustees meetings for each of the three Funds, Each Fund meets two to four times per year.
  • Tax work related to the disbursement of pension payments and disability payments
  • Timely calculation and payment of Federal and certain state taxes
  • Filing of required tax forms during the year
  • Reconciliation of related accounts between general ledger and database
  • Coordinate with other Teams regarding voids, stop pays, etc.
  • Oversee accounting for Fixed Assets and Capitalized Software
  • Timely and accurate reconciliations
  • Preparation and review of Personal Property Tax Returns
  • Support the Controller in the Budget Process for each of the three Funds
  • Annual Budget process on Department level
  • Maintain records for Budget Modifications and Contingencies

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Accounting, CPA required
  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience, including 4 years of managing multiple staff of various levels. Public Accounting experience with medium sized firm a plus.
  • Experience using multiple accounting systems; MS Dynamics SL a plus; demonstrated proficiency in MS Excel is required; experience with Bi360 a big plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, solve problems, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and remain calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, lead, leverage staff skill sets and improve processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize and develop timelines and schedules.
  • Strong customer service orientation and communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and management with varying degrees of financial knowledge.
  • Excellent organization skills and the ability to handle multiple, competing tasks simultaneously

Pay: $79,513.00 - $167,977.00 per year
