Job Description

9th Grade Summer Program Teacher - Breakthrough San Francisco

(English Language Arts and Math)

Summer Session 2022

COVID-19 Update:
We anticipate being fully in-person in summer 2022, after two summers that were entirely or largely virtual. We reopened for in-person programming in September 2021 and intend to remain in-person from this point forward. We will update this document should anything change.

Breakthrough Overview

Breakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School provides intensive academic enrichment and ongoing support to motivated San Francisco students with limited educational opportunities, ensuring they are academically successful, on the path to college, and celebrated for all aspects of their identity. Our students are extremely hard working but are under-represented in higher education: of the 254 fifth - twelfth graders currently in our program, 100% are of color; 71% speak a language other than English at home; and 92% will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college. Simultaneously, we train outstanding college students from across the country for education careers. For our summer 2019 residency (our last typical year), we selected 32 out of 292 Teaching Fellow applicants. 100% were high achievers at their colleges and universities; 71% were of color.

Position Overview

Breakthrough seeks two outstanding professional classroom teachers, one each for ELA and math, to help launch our first-ever in-person summer program for rising ninth graders, following a successful virtual pilot in summer 2021. The program seeks to further develop our students’ academic skills, study skills, and social-emotional toolbox, helping prepare them for a successful high school transition.

In ELA, students will read the novel Love is a Revolution by Renee Watson, engage in discussion about identity and peer dynamics, and work on their writing. In math, students will build their capacity to work with multi-step equations and functions in preparation for ninth grade algebra. Classes will be academically rigorous, interactive, and thoughtfully planned, and will provide a nurturing environment for our students on their journey to high school and college. In advisory, students will build community, play games, engage in conversations about high school, and discuss other topics relevant to their lives. For both academic subjects as well as advisory, Breakthrough will provide curricula that you’ll be asked to adapt.

Teachers will be expected to work on-site at SF Day School from approximately 9 am - 12:30 pm, Mon - Thu, and to use some time off-site each day to prepare for each class session and review student work, as needed. We anticipate a total commitment of roughly 20 hours per week (50% FTE). Each day, Mon - Thu, each teacher will teach one 90-minute section to a class of approximately 8 - 12 students, and lead one advisory to a group of approximately 4 - 6 students. Teachers will work with the same students for the first 3-week session, and a separate group for the second 3-week session.
