Job Description

Florida International University’s Summer Academy (FIU Summer Academy), operated by the Center for Children and Families (CCF) at FIU, provides a 7-week, full-day school readiness summer camp for 40 children, ages 4 to 5, and their families. Eligible children are recruited from preschool programs in or around the Liberty City community and are receiving, or eligible to receive, services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for moderate-to-severe learning and/or behavioral needs. Services are provided at an early childhood center in Liberty City. Each classroom maintains a high staff to student ratio (1:3) and is led by a certified teacher, behavioral specialist, and a team of highly trained paraprofessionals under the supervision of master’s and doctoral-level staff. Children participate in evidence-based program activities designed to maximize their successful entry into school by promoting, a) behavioral and social-emotional development, b) academic/early literacy skills, c) physical activity d) communication and adaptive development, and e) a positive attitude towards learning and school. Healthy meals, including breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided daily. Parent engagement is also a major aspect of the program and is facilitated through daily written feedback on each child’s progress and a weekly evidence-based School Readiness Parenting Program (SRPP). In the SRPP, parents learn specialized strategies to promote children’s behavioral and social-emotional functioning, early literacy skills, and positive approaches to learning.

Lead Counselors will work in a treatment team and will be responsible for preparing and implementing the social-emotional activities and behavior modification protocol, as well as assisting the certified teachers in executing activities in the program classroom. One lead counselor will be assigned to each classroom. They will also be responsible for coordinating all recreational activity components, including physical fitness activities, art, computer, recess, and supervising mealtimes. Lead Counselors will meet with participating families to provide brief feedback regarding child progress on a daily basis during program dismissals. Lead Counselors will attend both weekly group and individual supervision with the Program Coordinator and Program Supervisor and will be responsible for preparing and modifying daily report cards and individualized programs for assigned children.

High school diploma with four (4) years of experience or two (2) years of post-secondary education with one (1) year of experience.

Work Schedule

Dates of Employment: June 7th – August 9th (9 weeks)

Daily Hour Requirement: 7:00am-6:00pm, Monday - Friday
