2021-22 Literacy Coordinator-Whitewater LEADS
Whitewater LEADS supports literacy programming within the Hispanic community throughout the school district. The focus on this demographic is supported by the data showing the Hispanic population in Wisconsin falls below the poverty level at 22.78 percent and literacy is a substantial factor when addressing poverty alleviation. The overall goal is increasing the literacy programming and resources of this initiative by engaging in coordinated efforts to gather information on the educational needs of Latino students while providing their families with information on literacy resources. Co-develop and support programs that increase educational attainment among Latino students. Assist immigrant families in the acculturation process. Serve Wisconsin manages the initiative that engages AmeriCorps VISTA members to address poverty related to racial disparity throughout the state of Wisconsin by focusing on building the economic opportunity for the communities of Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Native American.
Member Duties : The VISTA member will conduct a needs assessment of residences in the four mobile home parks in the School District and in other neighborhoods with high numbers of Latino students, providing information on literacy resources to families at the same time. They will participate in the planning with Whitewater Leads board members in the design of a Cultural Broker program. They will recruit UW-Whitewater students to assist in after-school tutoring at the Whitewater Middle School, Whitewater High School, and potentially one/two elementary schools. Based on the needs assessment conducted, partner with community organizations in the planning for renovation of a small recreation area at one of the mobile home parks which has a large number of Latino families. Service Location: Whitewater, WI Language: Spanish/English **Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis. Please submit application as soon as possible to ensure consideration.
